Starting the year in the way I plan to continue it, I visited Sorbet for my first ever full-body massage.
Let me start off by saying hi and welcome to 2017! It took me a little while to get back into the swing of blogging again, but I’m back and let’s get started.
New Year’s Resolutions are not something I tend to sign up for every year. I love that the New Year is a great time to take a look at the last year and perhaps make changes, but I don’t think that New Year’s Resolutions work. Not for me at least. I did however take a step back, look back over 2015 and 2016 and decide that a few changes need to be made in order for 2017 to be the best year I can possibly make it.
New Year | Same Me | Slight Upgrades
Firstly, I need to focus on my family and myself more. The last year year and a bit has been rough after my dad passed away and learning how to adjust has been so much more intense than I ever thought it would be. Secondly, I need to make a concerted effort to look after myself. I tend to immerse myself 100% into my work and forget that sitting at a desk for hours and hours can cause harm or I forget to get up and move. It’s not great. Also, ending up in hospital with a couple of kidney stones within a month of each other was a warning sign that I’ve got to kick the stress that seems to sit on my shoulders. I know I’m not alone, we all go through a rough time and have to deal with in our own way.
The changes I decided to make started at the end of 2016 when I invested in a standing desk for my laptop from DeskStand which will help relieve that constant sitting. Daniel also spoiled me with a Fitbit Flex 2 which encourages me to move, sleep better, and track my fitness. I love a good gadget so I can’t help but wear it every single day!
Next up I decided to take more of an interest in this body of mine. Not a weightloss crusade, because honestly, I love my body. Every lump, fat roll, and stretch mark is 100% me and it’s taken me a long time to learn to love who and what I am. I do however want to get to know more about what lays beneath the skin. So I’ve started doing yoga a few times a week from the comfort of my lounge. When stressed I tend not to breathe and I find the yoga helps me focus on that. I’ll also be starting up with Curves again real soon because I want these muscles to be strong and awesome.
Finally, and the real point of this blog post, is that I’ve decided to try something new for me. After the kidney stones wrecked the muscles in my back, I was in quite a bit of pain, so I decided to treat myself to a full-body massage at my local Sorbet and I’m so glad that I did! I had never been for a massage before and had only a slight idea of what to expect.
Full-body Massage Experience
I made my appointment and showed up at the Sorbet in Paddocks slightly nervous, I will admit. My nerves were soon laid to rest as I met my beauty therapist and she greeted me with a smile. I was handed a robe and told to get to ready. With an awkward smile and a chuckle I mentioned that I had no idea what I was doing and my beauty therapist set my mind at ease by letting me know that I needed to strip down to my panties and get comfortable. Ha! I’m seriously glad that I asked. (Always ask!)
Once my eyebrow waxing treatment was done, I flipped over on to my stomach, got comfortable, and my lovely beauty therapist turned down the lights to start my massage. I have no idea what I was ever nervous about because it was an hour of full on bliss and I had aches relieved and muscles rubbed that I didn’t even know existed! After being prompted, I requested for the pressure to be gentle as I’m not great with that sort of pain. It was perfect and I never once wished the experience would end.
While experiencing this little slice of heaven on earth, here are few facts that I think every full-body massage newbie should know.
Full-body Massage Facts
#1 – It’s going to hurt
The fact of the matter is that your muscles are going to hurt. A professional is pushing on aching, tight muscles that have likely never been massaged before. It’s the perfect mixture between pleasure and pain and you’ll love it. I promise.
#2 – The massage therapist is going to touch your butt
I didn’t know what to expect when it came to this part of the massage and I very quickly got over the fact that a stranger was touching my butt. There are muscles in your behind that NEED a little extra love. Especially if you sit on it all day, trust me. It’s 100% worth it!
#3 – Your body is not an issue
If you’ve refrained from going for a full-body massage because you have issues with your body, I get it, but please know that it’s not necessary. You don’t have to be perfectly waxed and plucked, your beauty therapist will really not care. They’ve seen it all, touched it all, and are total professionals. Simply accept that your body is what it is and enjoy the relaxation.
Thanks to the lovely ladies at Sorbet, I’ve never been more relaxed in my life. I floated out of the treatment room and I can’t wait to do it again.
3 Full-body Massage Tips To Remember
- Keep breathing – More than once I found myself holding my breath. Don’t do this. Breathe deeply and relax into the pressure of the massage. If something is particularly uncomfortable, simply mention it to your beauty therapist.
- Clear your mind – Try not to think about what’s next on the agenda, the next blog post your going to write, or what you’ll be cooking for dinner. Make an effort to clear your mind and enjoy the moment.
- Stay hydrated – A great tip I received from my lovely friend Cath Jenkin is to stay hydrated. Especially after the massage as you’ll emerge from the treatment room like a relaxed butterfly with a dry mouth. Take a bottle of water with you to sip on once you’re done.
