Insurance - How to protect yourself on the internet

The internet is a mixed bag of awesome videos, delicious recipes, and hilarious memes. Unfortunately, there’s a darker side to the web that we’ve all experienced at some point and it’s no fun.

Hackers, cybercrime, and scams are a reality that we need to protect ourselves against. You may think it will never happen to you, but as an internet user, you’re at risk. Even when you least suspect it.

According to the scary cyber stats collected by King Price Insurance, more than 600,000 Facebook accounts are hacked every day! Even more surprising is that those nasty hackers attempt to attack online users every 39 seconds. Sadly, a whopping 68% of cash stolen from banking accounts has been unrecoverable.

I’ve gathered 5 top tips that you need to know to stay safe and protect yourself on the internet.

1. Strong passwords

A strong password is your number one defense when attempting to protect your information. The more complicated your password, the harder it will be for hackers to crack your account. Use a combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. BUT don’t make your password so complicated that you can’t remember it.

2. Don’t click the link

We’ve all received spam dodgy emails (or mass messages) that inform us about winning huge sums of cash or an exciting prize. Or perhaps you’ve seen the dodgy Facebook link shared to your profile that promises a voucher for your favourite store? The bad news is that there’s a 99% chance that link is a virus waiting to infect your computer. If you’re unsure, have a bad feeling, or simply want to stay safe, stay far away from bad links. It’s not worth it.

3. Install an anti-virus

Speaking of viruses… Those nasty bugs can do more damage than you could ever imagine. While every virus has a specific purpose, the most common outcome is that hackers will have access to your passwords and account details, as well as everything that you type.

One of the best ways to protect yourself against viruses is by installing anti-virus software. If you’re browsing the internet in any way, you need an anti-virus program. Even a free anti-virus is better than no anti-virus. One of the most important factors when using an anti-virus on your PC is that you need to keep it up to date. Don’t ignore those pop ups and be sure to let the software do the best possible job that it can to keep you safe.

4. Use secure sites

If you’re ever using your credit card when shopping online, there’s one rule that MUST be followed. Take a look at the URL bar and if you spot the green HTTPS (orΒ Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure), you’ll know that you’re on a safe connection. That means there’s less chance of your credit card details being stolen and used to make purchases on your behalf.

5. Invest in insurance

Cybercrime is on the rise and King Price Insurance is making sure that business owners in particular can be protected when the worst situation strikes. The launch of cybersure, cyber insurance for your business, will not only mean that you’re covered, but it will also grant you peace of mind.
