Experiments at Uphill Writer

Hello friends and readers! Welcome to 2018.

Seeing as February has arrived (and we all know that January is the first pancake of the year), it’s time to make a few changes around here!

What would life be without a little fun and change? Boring, that’s what. I’ve decided to do a little experimenting on the blog, because I can. This is my blog after all.

Basically, I’ve been struggling to blog lately. As much as I love it, I simply get really busy and in the list of things that need to be done, blogging has fallen to the bottom. Another issue I seem to be having is that my laptop is for work and my PC is for gaming, which means my brain won’t get into blogging mode! I realise this is weird.

All of these things are excuses (I know this), but right now they’re real and they’re keeping me from blogging. Which is a pity as I love it. I write for my daily job over at Inkfish Digital and that means I need a place to let my words run without being tied to anything official, you know?

In order to make things easier for myself, I’ve decided to make a change to the blog. One thing I can do with ease is access my phone. Whether I’m in bed, in the car, or on the couch, my phone is a safe space.

So, for the rest of 2018, I’ve decided to put the blog (as a website) on hold and instead try my hand at Instablogging.

I realise that blogging via Instagram is not a new concept, but I think it might just work for me. At least, I hope it will. If not, that’s okay because this is an experiment after all.

I’ve created an Uphill Writer Instagram account (give me a follow) and I’ll be attempting to post at least once a week.

Why Instagram?

There are a few reasons I have for choosing Instagram as my social blogging platform and why I think they could work for me.

  1. It’s easy – I can access the app on the go via my trusty phone. My Samsung S6 has a great camera and even once I upgrade, I always focus on having the ability to take nice photos. I can also create images on the go via the Canva app (which I adore).
  2. I love Instagram – As one of my favourite social medias, Instagram makes sense for me. I spend a lot of time scrolling and watching Instastories, so I may as well put it use for me. I also have a couple of other Instagram accounts already including @CapeTownCoffeeWorks and @PixelandPip. And of course, my personal Insta, @Robi27.
  3. It suits my needs – I’m not looking to get rich with my blog, I’m simply looking for a place to share. I don’t need to blog, but I enjoy it, so I’m willing to give this experiment a shot.

So what do you think? Have you attempted a similar experiment? Let me know in the comments below!

And again, please follow Uphill Writer on Instagram and leave your Insta handle below, so that I can follow you back. You can also Like Uphill Writer on Facebook where all posts will be shared too. So convenient!

Chat soon and happy blogging!

How to protect yourself on the internet (and win Bitcoin)

Insurance - How to protect yourself on the internet

The internet is a mixed bag of awesome videos, delicious recipes, and hilarious memes. Unfortunately, there’s a darker side to the web that we’ve all experienced at some point and it’s no fun.

Hackers, cybercrime, and scams are a reality that we need to protect ourselves against. You may think it will never happen to you, but as an internet user, you’re at risk. Even when you least suspect it.

According to the scary cyber stats collected by King Price Insurance, more than 600,000 Facebook accounts are hacked every day! Even more surprising is that those nasty hackers attempt to attack online users every 39 seconds. Sadly, a whopping 68% of cash stolen from banking accounts has been unrecoverable.

I’ve gathered 5 top tips that you need to know to stay safe and protect yourself on the internet.

Recipe videos that rock for lazy chefs

Recipe videos are a dime a dozen on the internet right now and if you love to cook, but you don’t have much time, they can be perfect!

Recipe Videos

Igor Miske

I have a confession to make. I’m addicted to watching recipe videos on Instagram. I could do it for hours. In fact, my very first Instagram collection was simply titled ‘food’, because it’s only right. Before Instagram introduced categories, I would save the recipe videos on my phone’s notepad, because that’s what a true addict does. Hah!

You’ve probably spotted these recipe videos all over the internet. Buzzfeed is filled to the brim with recipe videos and now there are accounts from all over the world mimicking the style and I love it. I decided to share my love for these simple recipes by showing off a few of my favourites here.

The thing about these videos and why they work for lazy chefs (like me) is that even if the recipe is complicated, the fact that it can be compacted into a short, cute video means I’m willing to try it! Whether it works out as being simple or not, the video made it look super easy, so I’m going to try it. (I know I’m not alone in this.)

Quick update: Uphill Writer is jetting off to Malta

Just a quick update on where Uphill Writer is off to this June!

Jetting off to Malta by Uphill Writer

Hello everyone! I’m so sorry I’ve been so quiet lately. I’ve been a busy bee and have many posts waiting in my drafts, but for now, I have some exciting news to share.

As most of you know, my brother and I started Inkfish Digital a few years back. It’s a copywriting business where we create content and tell stories for our clients as well as handle social media. Well, we’ve worked with some great companies, but thanks to our awesome clients based in Malta, I’m leaving South Africa for the very first time!
